The candy darter is native to parts of West Virginia and Virginia. Its only about 2 – 3 inches long and requires cool clean water to thrive. It has been listed as endangered since 2018. The biggest threats to its survival are habitat loss and non-native fish.

Ruffed Grouse are found throughout West Virginia and other states in the Appalachians, but their populations are declining due to habitat loss including a lack of burning and cutting trees.

Southern flying squirrels are found across the northeastern United States. They are likely more numerous than gray squirrels in the places where they are present.

Because they are nocturnal, you are lucky to see them! They have a stretchy part of their skin that enables them to glide between trees. They eat hickory nuts, and you may see their distinctive chew marks in the shells at the base of hickory trees.
